PROTON IRIZ 1.3 MT DRIVING EXPERIENCE

What is IRIZ?
Proton Iriz is the latest compact car by Proton in B-segment. Proton had produce the compact car before which is Proton Savvy. But it turn out to be unsuccessful in the market. Small segment car in Malaysian market are dominated by Toyata Passo based Perodua MyVi. So this latest model from Proton need to fight hard to stay in the market.

Launch
The launch of Iriz was back in 2014. Around the same time of Perodua launching its latest model, Perodua Axia. Although the segment is different, but the price range for both Iriz and Axia are very competitive. Perodua have a very good track record with Malaysian compared to Proton. Nevertheless, that doesn't stop me from trying to try the Iriz.

Variants
There are basically 3 variants of Iriz. Based, Middle Spec and High Spec. For these 3 groups Proton offers 2 engine capacity which are 1.3 and 1.6 as well as 2 types of transmission which are manual and cvt automatic.
Between each variants Proton had separate it based on the engine capacity and transmission. These makes you have wide range of choices made up of 1.6 cvt the Premium spec and 1.3 manual the most basic spec.
For Iriz, Proton make it standard for all range to have ABS, TCS, EBD, BA, HHA and ESC. Iriz also acquired 5 stars rating in ANCAP safety evaluation.

Experience
I had my hands on the Iriz after a while from its launching. It is my younger sister's car. She had make some comparison between Perodua Axia and Iriz for her first car. Being a Proton's fan, I had advised her to buy Iriz.

The Iriz that I've had drive was the most basic variant. It is 1.3 manual transmission car. Being a basic car, you might guess that this car will not be so nice. At least in terms of look and feel. But you know what? You guess it wrong.

The car is very nice in term of look and feel compared to the other base model cars.

In term of looks:
  - Metallic Red Fire paint (full body even the front and rear bumpers).
  - Sport rim (Five Spoke).
  - Projector headlamp

In term of interior
  - Nice and comfy seats. The design is like a bucket seat but with very much comfort.
  - USB port
  - Audio system with 2 front speaker (Blaupunkt if not mistaken) and Bluetooth connection.
  - Very comfort and silent surrounding (the sound insulation are good that makes you hardly hear the noise outside).
  - But for the air cond dial, it feels cheap.

Feels?
  - I feel good.

Other than that, I didn't take much notice.

Driving
I had a chance to drive the Iriz from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. There were 3 peoples of us and the journey took about 3 hours. It takes about 1 hour from Bandar Baru Bangi to Bentong's toll via MRR2. Starting from here was where the fun begin. Why? It was because the highway are the combination of various tight and fast cornering. To add more challenge the road goes uphill and downhill. And it is pretty nice conditions with 3 lanes.

Part of Karak Highway

Iriz are equipped with ESC with electric steering. It's a small car and have short wheelbase. So when cornering, sometimes it feels like the car want to correct itself when you go too fast especially when you go downhill. But don't worry. It's very stable and easy to control. But being small, short and light you might need to slow down a little compared to driving a Preve.

Being the 1.3 manual transmission car, the acceleration on hilly area is OK. It's noticeably slow but acceptable. The engine sound are loud. When cruising (after Karak toll the road is pretty much like normal highway. Only some part a bit bumpy) the car feels so comfortable. The speed were maintained around 120km/h to 140km/h.

Conclusions
Driving an Iriz was a pleasure. Overall I think Preve is much suitable for long distance driving. Iriz is a simple car and practical and I think it will be more suitable for city driving.

I've tried top spec MyVi. Compare to it, I feels driving Iriz are much fun. Even though the Iriz that I drove is a base model, I it is much comfy, silent, stable and sturdy.
