Proton X90: Why You Should Be Excited About Proton’s Third SUV Model

Hi there, car lovers! Welcome back to my blog where I share my passion for all things automotive. Today, I have some exciting news for you. Proton is about to launch its third SUV model, the Proton X90, and I have all the details you need to know about this new 7-seater beast.

The Proton X90 is based on the Geely Haoyue, a large D-segment SUV that competes with cars like the Hyundai Santa Fe. It measures 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,785 mm tall, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. That makes it significantly bigger than the Proton X70, which is already a spacious 5-seater SUV.

The Proton X90 will be powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a 48V BSG hybrid system, which produces 190 PS and 300 Nm of torque. This is the same engine that is locally assembled at Proton's Tanjung Malim plant and used in the Proton X50 and X70 MC, but with an added boost from the hybrid system. The power is delivered to the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

The hybrid system is Proton's first step in its electrification roadmap, which will eventually lead to a full-blown home-grown EV in the future. The 1.5 litre engine has been designed for electrification from the get-go, so it's a fairly straightforward add-on for Proton.

The Proton X90 will also feature a high level of connectivity features, with infotainment systems developed in conjunction with ACO Tech. I expect it to have a large touchscreen display, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, voice control and online navigation.

So how does the Proton X90 compare with the Proton X70? Well, aside from being bigger and more powerful, the Proton X90 will also offer more seating capacity and versatility. The Proton X90 will have two seating options: a 6-seater configuration with captain seats in the second row, or a 7-seater configuration with bench seats in the second row.

The third row seats can be folded down to create more boot space, or reclined for more comfort. The second row seats can also slide forward and backward to adjust legroom. The Proton X70, on the other hand, only has a 5-seater configuration with fixed rear seats.

The Proton X90 will also have more safety features than the Proton X70. The Proton X90 will come with six airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, ESC, TCS, HHC, HBA, LDW, LKA, AEB and ACC. The Proton X70 has most of these features as well, but lacks LKA and ACC.

The Proton X90 will be launched in Malaysia in Q2 2023. The price has not been announced yet, but I expect it to be higher than the Proton X70, which starts from RM 94k. The Proton X90 will be the flagship model in Proton's range, and it will appeal to those who want a large and luxurious SUV with hybrid technology and plenty of features.

That's all for today's blog post. I hope you enjoyed reading about the upcoming Proton X90. Let me know what you think about this new SUV in the comments below. Do you think it will be a hit or a miss? Would you buy one if you had the chance? And how do you think it will fare against its competitors?
